Black Moon Rising is a 1986 action-thriller movie directed by Harley Cokeliss, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hamilton, and Robert Vaughn. The film takes place in the near future, where the protagonist, John Carpenter (played by Tommy Lee Jones), is a thief hired by the government to steal a set of secret files from a corporation. John accomplishes the heist but loses the files during his escape. As he tries to retrieve the files, John finds himself tangled in a web of deception and betrayal that forces him to team up with an unlikely ally, a car thief named Nina (played by Linda Hamilton).

The movie begins with a high-speed chase sequence where John Carpenter steals a prototype car from a corporation called The Quint. The car, called the Black Moon, has a unique ability to reach extreme speeds. The Quint plans to sell the car to the highest bidder in the criminal underworld, and John's mission is to secure the car and deliver it to the government. However, the car is also equipped with a data recorder that holds incriminating evidence against The Quint's owner, Ed Ryland (played by Robert Vaughn).

After the heist, John meets with his handler, Earl Windom (played by Richard Jaeckel), to deliver the car and the files. But during the exchange, John realizes that he has been set up, and the files he stole are worthless. Earl Windom betrays John and steals the Black Moon, leaving John with nothing. John must now find a way to retrieve the car and clear his name.

John tracks down Nina, who is known for her expertise in stealing cars. Together, they plot a plan to steal the Black Moon back from The Quint. They break into The Quint's headquarters and retrieve the car, but not before they are spotted by Ryland's henchman, Luis (played by Bubba Smith). Nina and John then engage in a high-speed chase with Ryland's men, culminating in an explosive finale.

The plot of Black Moon Rising is a mix of heist and espionage elements, with a heavy emphasis on car chases and action sequences. The movie's strength lies in its fast-paced editing, exhilarating car chases, and Tommy Lee Jones's performance as the laconic and resourceful John Carpenter. Linda Hamilton's character, Nina, provides a romantic interest and a much-needed foil to John's character.

The movie's supporting cast, including Robert Vaughn as the smooth-talking villain and Bubba Smith as his henchman, perform adequately. However, the characters are underdeveloped and feel one-dimensional. The movie's soundtrack, composed by Lalo Schifrin, is a standout, providing a pulsating score that complements the film's action sequences.

Overall, Black Moon Rising is an exciting and entertaining action movie that delivers on its promise of high-speed thrills and suspense. The movie's plot may be predictable, but it's the execution that makes it worth watching. Tommy Lee Jones's performance elevates the movie, and the car chases are thrilling enough to keep viewers engaged. The movie may not be a classic, but it's a fun ride that is well worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Black Moon Rising is a 1986 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.5 and a MetaScore of 53.
