Black as Night is a supernatural horror-thriller movie that was released in 2021, directed by Maritte Lee Go. The movie follows a young woman, Shawna (Asjha Cooper), who lives in a low-income area of New Orleans where her neighborhood has an issue with a group of vampires that are preying on the homeless. Eventually, Shawna herself is transformed into a vampire but instead of using her new powers for evil, she decides to fight back against those who turned her and finds a way to restore her humanity.
Shawna is a teenage girl who is struggling to keep her family afloat in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. With very few options, she decides to hunt for scrap metal and sell it to earn some extra money. However, her search for scrap metal leads her to discover a group of homeless people who are being preyed on by a group of vampires. While attempting to help one of the victims in the hospital, Shawna is attacked and turned into a vampire herself.
Initially, Shawna is conflicted about her new powers and what she must do with them. As a young girl who has seen firsthand the devastation that Hurricane Katrina brought to her city and the struggles that her family has faced since then, Shawna is acutely aware of the plight of the homeless people that she has now joined. She is thoughtful and empathetic, and she uses her new abilities to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Shawna's transformation is a positive one, as she learns to live with the different characteristics of being a vampire and to make decisions that impact the lives of others in a positive way.
Throughout the movie, Shawna befriends two other characters - Vinny (Fabrizio Guido) and Luis (Mason Beauchamp). The relationship between the three teenagers is heartwarming and adds a layer of depth to the movie. Vinny is a young man who is trying to help the homeless in the area, while Luis is a smart and talented boy who is part of a magnet school in the city. The chemistry between the three is palpable, and their relationships provide a counter-balance to the film's otherwise darker themes.
As the movie progresses, Shawna discovers that there is a way to restore her humanity after her transformation. This discovery sets her on a path to expose the vampire group and put an end to their reign of terror for good. The final act of the movie is intense, and the tension is maintained throughout, with unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience engaged until the credits roll.
Overall, Black as Night is a well-executed horror-thriller that explores complex themes of redemption, power, and humanity. Asjha Cooper delivers a standout performance, as does Fabrizio Guido and Mason Beauchamp. The film's pacing is tight, and the script is well-written, with just enough humor sprinkled in to keep it from becoming too heavy. If you enjoy horror films with a social conscience and a strong emotional center, Black as Night is definitely worth a watch.
Black as Night is a 2021 horror movie. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5 and a MetaScore of 53.
