Uxbal lives in Barcelona with his two children, whose estranged wife is an abusive alcoholic who suffers from bipolar disorder. Although he can speak to spirits and is a good man at heart, he works as a criminal, managing groups of illegal immigrants that work in sweatshops and as street vendors. When he discovers that he has terminal cancer he tries to set his affairs in order in regards to his children, his brother, and the people whom he supervises, but the complications of life and his fraught relationship with the law make this a struggle with few happy endings.
