Billa is a 2007 Tamil-language action-thriller film directed by Vishnuvardhan and produced by L. Suresh. The movie stars Ajith Kumar, Nayanthara, and Rahman, and is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. The film begins with a shootout in Malaysia, where a police officer (Prabhu) gets killed while attempting to foil a drug shipment. The kingpin of the drug syndicate, David Billa (Ajith Kumar), is presumed dead, but after a year, he emerges in Goa in a dramatic fashion, announcing his return into the world of crime.
In the meantime, the Indian police, aided by Interpol, launch a massive operation to apprehend Billa and break his empire. A senior officer (Rahman) is deputed to head the investigation, and the officers get a breakthrough when they capture an aide of Billa, Velu (Yog Japee), who discloses the whereabouts of Billa's associates.
One of the associates is a woman, Sasha (Nayanthara), who is coerced by the police to bring Billa out of hiding. She succeeds in her mission and hands over Billa to the police but finds out later that she has fallen in love with him. Meanwhile, Billa manipulates the police and escapes from their custody.
Billa's next move is to organize a heist to retrieve a precious diamond, which is guarded by the daughter of a powerful businessman. He assembles a team of experts, including his trusted aide, Dimitri (Salim Baig), and proceeds with the heist. However, things go awry, and Billa is forced to improvise to come out of the mess.
The high point of the film is the cat-and-mouse game between the police and Billa, as he dodges their moves and continues with his nefarious plans. The film blends elements of flashy visuals, high-octane action, and twisty narrative to keep the audience engaged.
Ajith Kumar's portrayal of the suave and ruthless Billa is a standout performance, and he oozes charm and menace in equal measure. Nayanthara gives a convincing performance as the conflicted Sasha, torn between her love for Billa and her duty as a police informer. Rahman is the perfect fit for the role of a stern and shrewd police officer, determined to bring Billa to justice. The supporting cast, including Lakshmi Rai and Adithya Menon, also put in good performances.
The film is notable for its sleek and stylish visuals, with the locales of Malaysia, Goa, and Hyderabad captured in all their glory. The film's music, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, is a major highlight and includes catchy tracks such as "Seval Kodi" and "My Name is Billa."
Overall, Billa is an entertaining action film that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The film's high production values, gripping storyline, and outstanding performances make it a must-watch for fans of the genre.
