Big Sky is a suspenseful thriller about a troubled young woman named Hazel (played by Bella Thorne) who suffers from agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that prevents her from leaving her home. Hazel's mother, Dee (played by Kyra Sedgwick), is worried about her daughter's well-being and enlists the help of a therapist to treat her. However, when Dee receives a mysterious phone call from Hazel's estranged father, she realizes that there may be more to her daughter's condition than meets the eye. To get to the bottom of the situation, Dee books a flight to Montana with Hazel in tow, hoping to reunite her with her father.
But their journey takes a dark turn when their plane is hijacked by two dangerous criminals, played by Frank Grillo and Aaron Tveit. Trapped in the wilderness with no way to call for help, Dee and Hazel are forced to navigate a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the hijackers while trying to survive the harsh Montana terrain.
As the tension mounts and the danger escalates, the characters are forced to confront their deepest fears and secrets. Hazel's agoraphobia becomes both a blessing and a curse as she must use her heightened sense of awareness to navigate the wilderness and outsmart the hijackers.
Throughout the film, the relationships between the characters are explored in depth. Hazel and Dee's strained relationship is front and center, as is Hazel's complicated relationship with her father. Meanwhile, the two hijackers have a complex dynamic, with one trying to force the other to confront his own demons.
The Montana wilderness itself becomes a character in the film, with stunning aerial shots and sweeping landscapes providing a sense of both beauty and danger. The cinematography captures the isolation and vastness of the wilderness, creating a sense of claustrophobia and intensity as the characters are relentlessly pursued by the hijackers.
The film is expertly directed by Jorge Michel Grau, who creates a sense of tension and claustrophobia throughout. The script, written by Evan M. Wiener, is gripping and unpredictable, with several unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
The performances are all excellent, with Bella Thorne giving a standout performance as Hazel. She brings a vulnerability and intensity to the role, fully embodying the character's fears and inner strength. Kyra Sedgwick is also fantastic as Dee, conveying both maternal concern and a steely determination to protect her daughter.
Frank Grillo delivers a menacing performance as the lead hijacker, while Aaron Tveit brings a vulnerability and complexity to his character. The supporting cast, including the pilot of the hijacked plane, also give strong performances that add depth and richness to the film.
Overall, Big Sky is a gripping and intense psychological thriller that explores the complexities of family relationships and the power of fear. With excellent performances, stunning visuals, and an unpredictable plot, it's a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
