Big Daddy is a 1999 American comedy film starring Adam Sandler, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jon Stewart. The movie is directed by Dennis Dugan and written by Sandler and Steve Franks. The plot of the movie revolves around Sonny Koufax (Adam Sandler), a lazy law school grad who refuses to take the bar exam and is content with living off a settlement he received after a car accident. He also has a girlfriend named Vanessa (Kristy Swanson) who is tired of his lack of responsibility and breaks up with him.
One day, Sonny finds a little boy named Julian (Dylan and Cole Sprouse) on his doorstep claiming to be the son of a man who had a one-night stand with Sonny's ex-girlfriend. Sonny at first tries to get rid of Julian but starts to warm up to him and decides to take care of him for a short time. However, when the social services come to take Julian away, Sonny decides to fight for custody of him.
Throughout the movie, Sonny's antics get in the way of his efforts to become a responsible parent while he is simultaneously trying to win back Vanessa's love.
The movie features Adam Sandler's signature style of humor, with plenty of physical comedy and crude jokes. Sandler's character, Sonny, is initially selfish and immature but gradually grows to love and care for Julian.
Joey Lauren Adams plays Layla, a waitress Sonny starts dating while trying to win Vanessa back. Jon Stewart plays Kevin Gerrity, Sonny's friend and fellow law school grad who is now a successful lawyer.
The highlight of the movie is Adam Sandler's performance, which perfectly captures the sarcastic and immature nature of the character of Sonny Koufax. The chemistry between Sandler and the child actors is also commendable. The Sprouse twins give charming performances as Julian, which makes the audience feel more invested in the story.
Big Daddy performed well at the box office, grossing over $234 million worldwide. Along with Sandler's previous hits, this movie helped establish his position as a box office draw for comedies. The film also spawned a hit single with the song "When I Grow Up" by Garbage.
Overall, Big Daddy is a hilarious and heartwarming movie about growing up and taking responsibility. With Sandler's raw comedic talent and the charming performances by the Sprouse twins, it's no wonder the film was a crowd-pleaser.
