Bhoothnath Returns is a 2014 Indian Hindi-language supernatural comedy-drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Bhushan Kumar. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role of Bhoothnath, Boman Irani as a corrupt politician, and child actor Parth Bhalerao as Akhrot, a street-smart slum boy. The film is a sequel to the 2008 film Bhoothnath and features Bhoothnath returning to Earth to help a young boy win a local election.
The storyline begins with the ghost Bhoothnath being ridiculed and mocked by the inhabitants of the world of spirits for his inability to hurt any human being. Humiliated by his inability to scare anyone, Bhoothnath decides to return to Earth and prove that he is not a failure. On his arrival, he discovers that his old bungalow has been replaced by a high-rise building in a rapidly growing urban slum called Dharavi. He encounters Akhrot, a young slum boy who is fascinated by the tales of the ghost Bhoothnath and is not afraid of him at all. The two become friends, and Bhoothnath decides to help Akhrot and his friends in their quest to make Dharavi a better place to live.
Bhoothnath learns that Dharavi has been overrun by corruption, crime, and poverty, and that the people are desperate for a change. In the upcoming local elections, a corrupt politician named Bhau (Boman Irani) is expected to win the seat for the fifth time. Bhoothnath decides to run against him and is surprised to find that he is a favorite among the people, who are pleased that a ghost has taken an interest in their problems.
The movie captures the political machinations and dirty tricks employed by Bhau and his goons to sabotage Bhoothnath's campaign. The children decide to help Bhoothnath by using their skills to foil the politician's plans. There is a lot of humor and a touch of emotion in how the story unfolds.
A major highlight of the movie is the chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Parth Bhalerao. The veteran actor puts on a fine show as Bhoothnath, portraying a ghost who is as frustrated and vulnerable as he is mischievous. He shares several enjoyable scenes with the young actor who steals the show with his talent and natural flair. Boman Irani, as the villainous Bhau, delivers a competent performance that showcases his excellent comic timing.
The film's themes revolve around democracy, corruption, and the power of common people in bringing about change. The movie highlights the fact that a handful of honest and committed individuals can make a difference, and that no matter how powerful the opposition, one must never give up the fight for a good cause.
The cinematography is vibrant, and the songs, composed by Meet Bros Anjjan, Palash Muchhal, and Ram Sampath, are catchy and entertaining. The film's production design is top-notch, with the sets and costumes beautifully recreating the bustling slum of Dharavi.
Bhoothnath Returns is overall an entertaining and heartwarming film that has its heart in the right place. It is a movie that can be enjoyed by all, irrespective of age or gender. The film's message of hope and change is delivered in an agreeable manner that will make you laugh and inspire you at the same time.
