Beyond Sleep is a Dutch film from 2016, directed by Boudewijn Koole and based on the novel Nooit meer slapen by Willem Frederik Hermans. The movie follows the journey of a young geology student named Alfred (Reinout Scholten van Aschat) who travels to the north of Norway to conduct research for his thesis. Alfred hopes to find evidence of ancient geological activity in the area, but quickly finds himself in over his head. The unfamiliar terrain and harsh weather conditions prove to be challenging, and he soon discovers that his research partner Arne (Anders Baasmo) is less than reliable. Additionally, Alfred begins to struggle with insomnia, leaving him exhausted and unable to focus on his work.

As Alfred delves deeper into his research, he becomes increasingly obsessed with his goal of discovering evidence of a meteorite impact. He meets several locals, including a wild and enigmatic Sami woman (Jenny Hval) who offers him a glimpse into a different way of life. Alfred also runs into an old friend, Johannes (Jakop Ahlbom), who has been working in Norway for years and offers Alfred some much-needed guidance.

Throughout the film, Alfred's mental state deteriorates as he becomes more and more obsessed with his mission. He suffers from vivid nightmares and increasingly hallucinatory visions, leading to a sense of unreality that permeates the movie. The film also raises questions about the nature of scientific inquiry and the relationship between man and nature.

The cinematography in Beyond Sleep is stunning, with breathtaking shots of the Norwegian wilderness and stunning visuals that capture the majesty of the landscape. The score by Alex Simu is haunting and atmospheric, adding to the film's dreamlike quality.

The performances in the movie are excellent, particularly Reinout Scholten van Aschat as Alfred. He imbues the character with a sense of wide-eyed wonder and determination that makes his struggles all the more poignant. Anders Baasmo is also great as the unreliable Arne, and Jakop Ahlbom brings a steadying presence to the movie as the experienced Johannes.

Overall, Beyond Sleep is a thought-provoking and visually stunning film that explores themes of ambition, obsession, and the beauty and danger of nature. It's a slow burn of a movie, with a deliberate pacing that rewards patient viewers. While it may not be for everyone, those interested in a meditative and challenging film will find much to admire here.
