Beyond Skyline is a 2017 sci-fi thriller directed by Liam O'Donnell, which takes place after the story of the 2010 movie Skyline, which was also directed by O'Donnell. It features Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic and Jonny Weston in leading roles, along with a supporting cast of actors. The movie begins with Mark (Frank Grillo), a tough and jaded LAPD detective, who has just lost his son due to a drug overdose. He struggles to connect with his remaining son, Trent (Jonny Weston) while maintaining relationships with his sister-in-law Audrey (Bojana Novakovic) and her son.
As the morning turns out to be a fight between humans and aliens. Mark, Trent and Audrey find themselves caught in the middle of a fierce war between mankind and extraterrestrial invaders. The aliens have come down to earth and have begun abducting people in Los Angeles. The three protagonist escape into the subway system to evade the invasion, but this marks the beginning of an intense and thrilling story that has Mark fighting tooth and nail to protect his family and save humanity from the aggressive extraterrestrial invasion.

As the aliens draw near, Mark and his group soon discover an unexpected twist to the aliens' motives. The aliens are actually harvesting humans for their brains, as these contain the magic ingredient allowing the aliens to survive on Earth. Soon Mark and his allies fall into the hands of the alien army, and they must use all of their wits and resourcefulness to escape and fight back against these highly advanced creatures without losing their humanity.

The action in Beyond Skyline is non-stop, and there's never a dull moment. From the initial action sequence to the thrilling moments of escape from the aliens, the viewer is kept on the edge of their seat. Backed by some impressive visual effects, Beyond Skyline really delivers on the adrenaline front.

The film isn't just about action and thrills, there's genuine depth in the relationships between the characters. Mark's arc is particularly touching as he grapples with the loss of his son and his determination to make up for his past mistakes. His relationship with Audrey is also well-crafted, and their chemistry and connection is palpable throughout the movie.

Bojana Novakovic does an excellent job portraying Audrey, infusing the role with grit and determination, and at the same time empathy and heart. She is the glue that holds the family together amidst the chaos and destruction of the alien invasion.

Trent is the Least appealing of the three characters, but Weston does a great job in bringing life to this underwritten character. He comes into his own as the story progresses and becomes an integral member of the team fighting against the aliens.

The alien designs are interesting, and much more complex than what was seen in the previous movie. They're significantly upgraded, and while still recognizable as an alien species, they're unique enough to be interesting on a visual level.

All in all, Beyond Skyline is an enjoyable sci-fi action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. It doesn't break any new ground, but it's a solid entry in the genre, boasting excellent performances and heart-pumping action sequences. Fans of sci-fi thrillers and the original movie will certainly enjoy this one.
