Between Worlds is a 2018 supernatural thriller directed by Maria Pulera and stars Nicolas Cage, Franka Potente, and Penelope Mitchell. The movie revolves around Joe (Nicolas Cage), a truck driver who is haunted by the death of his wife and daughter. In an attempt to cope with his grief, Joe becomes entangled in a dangerous and otherworldly affair with a woman named Julie (Franka Potente) and her comatose daughter Billie (Penelope Mitchell).
At the beginning of the film, Joe meets Julie at a gas station and almost immediately feels a strong connection to her. Julie asks Joe to help her move her daughter's comatose body to a new hospital, and Joe reluctantly agrees. As they travel together, Julie reveals that she believes her daughter's soul is trapped between worlds and that she is searching for someone who can help her bring Billie back to the world of the living.
Joe is initially skeptical but is drawn in by Julie's unwavering belief in the supernatural. As the two grow closer, Joe begins to have vivid dreams in which he meets Billie in the realm between life and death. He soon becomes convinced that he has the power to bring Billie back and begins to conduct a series of occult rituals in an attempt to save her.
However, Joe's actions soon attract the attention of Billie's father, who believes that Joe is exploiting his daughter for his own gain. As tensions rise, Joe becomes increasingly desperate to bring Billie back, and the line between the living and the dead begins to blur. The film's climax is a thrilling and surreal sequence in which Joe must navigate the realm between life and death to save Billie's soul.
One of the standout aspects of Between Worlds is Nicolas Cage's performance as Joe. Cage is known for his over-the-top acting style, but in this film, he gives a surprisingly restrained and nuanced performance. Joe is a haunted and fragile character, and Cage does an excellent job of conveying his pain and desperation.
Franka Potente is also excellent as Julie. She brings a quiet intensity to the role, and her chemistry with Cage is palpable. Penelope Mitchell, meanwhile, does a great job of portraying Billie's comatose body and the various states of consciousness that she inhabits over the course of the film.
The film's visuals are another strong point. Director Maria Pulera makes excellent use of color and light to create a dreamlike atmosphere. The scenes set in the realm between life and death are particularly striking, with their surreal and otherworldly imagery.
The movie's pacing is one of its weaknesses. At times, the film drags a bit, and some scenes feel repetitive. Additionally, the plot can be hard to follow at times, particularly as the film veers into more and more esoteric territory.
Overall, Between Worlds is an intriguing and atmospheric supernatural thriller. It's not a perfect film, but it's a great showcase for Nicolas Cage's talents as an actor, and its surreal visuals and haunting score make it well worth a watch.
Between Worlds is a 2018 mystery with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 3.9 and a MetaScore of 24.
