The film's title refers to the period between World War I and World War II. The film is set in four time periods, 1918, 1920, 1932 and 1941. This film tracks the career of Dr. Edward Trenbow, who grows to be a well-respected Sydney psychiatrist. A veteran of World War I and a forward-thinking Australian psychiatrist, Trenbow takes up residence at Callan Park Asylum in the 1920s and starts to develop new Freudian psychoanalytical and physical treatments, especially in regards to traumatized war veterans. But his progressive methods meet with resistance from the conservative medical community and the status quo.
