Beti Bete is a 1964 family drama movie that explores the dynamics of a joint family and the love that binds them. Directed by L. V. Prasad, the movie stars Sunil Dutt, Saroja Devi B., and Jamuna in lead roles. The story revolves around two brothers, Ratan (Sunil Dutt) and Chaman (Jamuna), who are married and living with their father Singh Sahab (Ulhas) and their families. Ratan is a kind-hearted, honest man who works hard to provide for his family. Chaman, on the other hand, is cunning and selfish, and always tries to take advantage of his brother and father.
The two brothers have a strained relationship, and when Singh Sahab falls ill, he decides to divide his property among his sons. But Chaman, with the help of his conniving wife Hansa (Saroja Devi B.), manages to manipulate his father and get a bigger share of the property. This leads to a rift between the two brothers, and they stop talking to each other.
Meanwhile, Ratan's wife Shanta (Shubha Khote) gives birth to a daughter, and Chaman's wife Hansa gives birth to a son. But tragedy strikes when Hansa dies during childbirth, leaving Chaman devastated. Ratan and Shanta offer to adopt the newborn boy as their own, hoping that it will bring the two brothers closer.
But Chaman, blinded by his greed and ego, refuses to let go of his son and creates a scene. This leads to further rifts between the two families, and things come to a head when Ratan and Chaman's children grow up and fall in love with each other.
How the family members overcome their differences and come together forms the crux of the story. The movie deals with themes of love, sacrifice, and family values and has some memorable songs like "O Mere Beti" and "Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaye".
Sunil Dutt delivers a powerful performance as the honest and selfless Ratan, while Jamuna is convincing as the conniving Chaman. Saroja Devi B. shines in her role as the devious Hansa, and Shubha Khote is excellent as Ratan's supportive wife Shanta. The music by Shankar Jaikishan is soulful, and the direction by L.V. Prasad is spot on.
Overall, Beti Bete is a heartwarming family drama that will leave you with a smile on your face. It's a timeless classic that is still relevant today, and a must-watch for fans of old Bollywood movies.
