Tomboy Jess Bhamra is unlike the other women of her traditional Punjabi family. While they value marriage and household skills, Jess wants nothing more than to play soccer and is actually good at it. As her sister's wedding approaches, her parents put more pressure on her to follow their cultural traditions. Instead, she spends her time playing soccer with her friend Tony in the park and when a girl named Jules discovers this she asks Jess to try out for a local team. Despite her parents disapproval, Jess joins up. Over time, she falls for team's young coach Joe, unaware that Jules also has feelings for him. The budding relationship between Jess and Joe causes problems between she and Jules that Jess struggles with. When Jess' parents find out about the soccer they forbid her to play anymore.
The team's final match is on the same day as Jess' sister's wedding and she must choose whether to defy her parents or attend the wedding. Joe asks Jess' father to let her play in it but he won't relent. During the wedding's reception party Tony convinces her father to allow her to go and finish the game. With a difficult kick in which Jess must bend the ball like her hero Beckham, she wins the game and she and Jules are both given soccer scholarships to a California university by an American scout. Jess won't tell her parents about the scholarship until Tony intervenes.
Once she tells them the truth, Jess' parents decide to bend their cultural rules and allow her to take the scholarship. When Jess and Jules are leaving for America Joe shows up at the airport to tell Jess that he loves her and the pair share a kiss. Jess promises that they will deal with it all later and, while she's away at school, Joe and her father begin forging a friendship.
