Released in 2001, Beijing Rocks chronicles the rock and roll scene in Beijing and uses that as a chance to explore the cultural and political gulf between Hong Kong and China. It portrays independent artists who are seeking to resist the over-commercialization of the music industry. The 110-minute movie earned both best cinematography and best picture nominations in the Hong Kong Film Awards and has become a cult classic among Chinese students.
