As the story progresses, it is revealed that twenty years ago, a young woman named Chandramukhi (also played by Waheeda Rehman) was in love with Thakur Rameshwar Singh's elder son, Kumar. Chandramukhi was of lowly birth, which made the Thakur household step in and break off the relationship. Chandramukhi, devastated, committed suicide. On the twentieth anniversary of her death, her ghost returns to haunt the mansion and her lover's family.

The film charms with its well-written storyline and the remarkable performances of its lead actors. Biswajeet Chatterjee, who plays Ashok, delivers a likeable and convincing portrayal of a young man who must save the day. Waheeda Rehman, in her dual roles as Madhumati and Chandramukhi, is engaging and portrays her characters convincingly – one with curiosity and the other with vengeful fury.
