Bedeviled is a 2016 horror movie that follows a group of friends who are stalked by a mysterious app after the death of their friend. The movie begins with Alice (played by Saxon Sharbino) finding out that she has been given a new phone by her friend, Caleb (Mitchell Edwards), who has recently passed away. Along with her other friends, including Haley (Alexa Hilgert), Dan (Brandon Soo Hoo), and Nikki (Victory Van Tuyl), Alice discovers that the phone has a new app, Mr. Bedevil, installed on it.
At first, the app seems harmless and provides the group with fun and entertainment. However, as they start to receive disturbing messages and images from Mr. Bedevil, they realize that the app is more sinister than they initially thought.
As the group's fear and paranoia grows, they begin to experience terrifying hauntings and encounters with demonic creatures. Alice and her friends must race against time to uncover the truth behind the app and stop Mr. Bedevil from killing them all.
Bedeviled is a creepy and suspenseful horror movie that plays on our fears of technology and the unknown. The film is well-paced, with a slow build-up that gradually escalates to a heart-stopping finale. The eerie visuals and jump scares will keep you on the edge of your seat, while the underlying themes of friendship, loss, and grief add depth to the plot.
Saxon Sharbino shines in her role as Alice, the film's protagonist. Sharbino delivers a convincing performance as a young woman struggling to cope with the loss of her friend while simultaneously battling her fears of the supernatural. Mitchell Edwards, Brandon Soo Hoo, Alexa Hilgert, and Victory Van Tuyl also give commendable performances, bringing depth and relatability to their respective characters.
One of the most impressive aspects of Bedeviled is the film's production quality. Director Abel Vang and Burlee Vang utilize various camera techniques and clever editing to heighten the film's tension and terror. The use of shadow and light, in particular, adds an extra layer of suspense and intrigue to the movie.
The movie's soundtrack is equally notable, with a well-crafted score that complements the film's visuals perfectly. The atmospheric music creates an ominous and haunting mood, enhancing the film's horror elements.
Although Bedeviled isn't perfect, with moments of predictability and clichés common in the horror genre, the movie manages to build a world with its own set of rules and lore. The app on the phone becomes an important character of its own, and the film manages to root the story in the characters' personal connections, making their situation all the more bleak.
Overall, Bedeviled is an entertaining and well-executed horror movie that will leave you feeling unnerved and spooked. The film is a solid example of how to create a fresh take on a familiar formula and speaks to the dangers of diving headfirst into digital culture.
Bedeviled is a 2017 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 38 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.2.
