Beautiful Creatures, released in 2013, is a supernatural romantic drama that stars Alice Englert, Viola Davis, and Emma Thompson among other actors. The story is set in a small town called Gatlin, located in South Carolina, and revolves around two main characters, Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert). The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
Ethan Wate is a high school student who dreams of escaping the confines of his small town and exploring the world. However, his plans for the future are put on hold when he meets Lena Duchannes, a mysterious and beautiful girl who has just moved to Gatlin to live with her uncle, Macon Ravenwood (Jeremy Irons). Ethan is immediately drawn to Lena and their mutual attraction quickly develops into a deep and meaningful relationship.
However, Ethan soon discovers that Lena and her family are witches, or 'casters' as they prefer to be called. Lena is cursed and will be claimed for either the light or the dark on her sixteenth birthday, due to her ancestry. Lena is worried that she might turn dark like her mother before her, and so she and Ethan try desperately to find a way to break the curse and keep her from being claimed by the dark side.
Despite the challenges they face, Ethan and Lena continue to deepen their relationship, but as Lena's sixteenth birthday draws near, they are forced to confront the obstacles that threaten to tear them apart. They come up against not only the prejudices of the townspeople but also Lena's own family, who are fiercely divided on the matter of Lena's destiny. Lena's evil cousin Ridley Duchannes (Emmy Rossum) is also a major obstacle. Ridley is a Siren and possesses the ability to manipulate people's thoughts and actions, and she uses this power to try to seduce Ethan and push him away from Lena.
Viola Davis plays Amma, a librarian who is also a seer and helps Ethan and Lena in their quest to find a way to break the curse. Emma Thompson plays Sarafine, Lena's mother, who is a powerful caster on the dark side of the supernatural world, and is determined to ensure that Lena is claimed for the dark.
Overall, Beautiful Creatures is a well-crafted love story that is steeped in the paranormal world of witches and casters. The plot is engaging and the characters are well-developed, allowing the viewer to feel emotionally invested in their struggles. The film also features some stunning cinematography, particularly in its use of visual effects and its evocative portrayal of the supernatural world.
The themes of love, acceptance, and overcoming prejudice are particularly well-explored in the film, as they are seen through the lens of the paranormal world. The movie highlights how love can conquer all and that true love transcends even the supernatural world. The story is set in the South and the filmmakers do a good job of capturing the essence of a small town and the prejudices that exist within it.
The performances by the actors are also noteworthy. Especially Emma Thompson, who plays a convincing villainess in Sarafine, using her trademark wit and charm to make her character memorable. Alden Ehrenreich, who plays Ethan, is particularly impressive, bringing depth and sensitivity to his role. Alice Englert also does a good job of portraying the complexities of her character, Lena, who is struggling to find her place in the world.
In conclusion, Beautiful Creatures is a well-executed supernatural romance-drama, with engaging characters, an emotional story and a unique setting that make it an enjoyable watch. Whether you are a fan of supernatural movies or romantic dramas, this film is definitely worth watching.
