Bear Shooters is a 1930 comedy film that follows the misadventures of the Our Gang kids as they unintentionally get lost in the wilds of nature when they set out on a camping trip. The film features Norman 'Chubby' Chaney, Jackie Cooper, and Allen 'Farina' Hoskins, among other young actors. The movie begins with the kids and their fathers excitedly preparing for their camping trip, eagerly packing their gear, tents, and enough food to sustain them for a few days. However, things start to go wrong almost immediately, as the boys struggle to put up their tents and engage in endless horseplay.
As the fathers leave to get more supplies, the kids decide to go for a walk in the nearby woods, but soon end up getting lost after Farina sets down and loses his "crutch," a stick that he uses to help him walk due to an injury. The kids then proceed to wander around, getting into one hilarious mishap after another, as they try to find their way back to camp.
Along the way, they encounter a bear cub and, thinking it to be a harmless little creature, they decide to take it with them. However, things take a turn for the worse when they later come across the mother bear, which they mistake for the father bear, and things take a chaotic turn from there.
Eventually, the dads return to the campsite, only to realize that their children are missing, and promptly set out to search for them. They eventually come across the kids, take them back to camp and, to their surprise, see that they have a new pet bear.
The final third of the movie focuses on the hijinks that ensue when the boys try to take care of the bear, which is anything but easy. The bear gets into mischief, causing chaos in the campsite and making the boys' fathers very unhappy. Eventually, the boys and their dads decide it is best to return the bear to the wild, which they do in a hilarious sequence that proves to be the perfect end to the movie.
Overall, Bear Shooters is a wonderful addition to the Our Gang series and captures the essence of the fun and adventure that defined many of the early comedy films of the 1930s. The actors give delightful performances, and the humor in the film holds up even today, almost a century after it was made. This early precocious team of child actors- Norman 'Chubby' Chaney, Jackie Cooper, and Allen 'Farina' Hoskins, among others, showcase their talent and show that they are capable of carrying a film even at a young age.
