A story of passion, pain and the struggle for freedom, this film profiles the extraordinary Sicilian photographer and anti-Mafia activist Letizia Battagli. At 37 Letizia left her husband of more than twenty years to become a journalist. When she found that she could better sell her articles if they were accompanied by photographs, she picked up a camera and slowly developed a burning passion for photography. After years of racing on her Vespa to crime scenes with her camera, Letizia accumulated an archive of death and decay of Palermo and its citizens. But simply documenting what was happening wasn't enough for her and she became an anti-Mafia activist and environmental politicia.
Resisting conventionality for most of her life, she retains an incredible passion for justice and the simple things in life. In this film, she reflects on what her work signifies, what aging means for her, and wonders if she has enough time left to do all the things she still wants to do
Battaglia paints a uniquely intimate portrait of this warrior woman. The city of Palermo provides the background, Letizia the foreground, creating a collage of memories, thoughts and Battaglia's award-winning black and white photographs.
Battaglia is a 2004 documentary with a runtime of 58 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.6.
