Baseraa is a 1981 Indian drama film directed by Ramesh Talwar and produced by Ramesh Behl. The movie stars Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee Gulzar, and Rekha in leading roles. The storyline revolves around the lives of two brothers- Balraj Sahani (Shashi Kapoor) and his younger brother Avinash (Ranjeet)- and their family. Balraj is a successful businessman and lives a luxurious life with his wife Shobha (Rakhee Gulzar) and two children. Avinash, on the other hand, is a struggling poet and lives in a small rented apartment.
Despite the differences in their lifestyles, the two brothers share a strong bond. However, things take a drastic turn when Balraj suffers a huge loss in his business, leaving him bankrupt. He is forced to sell his properties, including his house and car, and move with his family into Avinash's small apartment.
The film then portrays the struggles faced by the family as they adjust to their new lifestyle. Shobha finds it difficult to cope with the changes and often argues with Balraj, blaming him for their current situation. Balraj, on the other hand, feels helpless and guilty about his failures.
Meanwhile, Avinash falls in love with a young woman named Farida (Rekha), who lives in the same building. Their relationship blossoms despite Farida's disapproving mother and Balraj's skepticism about their future.
The story takes a new turn when Balraj discovers that a wealthy man is interested in buying the land on which their old house was built. Balraj sees this as an opportunity to make a comeback and regain his wealth. However, he faces challenges as the land is occupied by squatters who refuse to move. Balraj and Avinash's efforts to convince the squatters to vacate the land lead to some emotional moments in the movie.
The movie is filled with powerful performances by all the lead actors, particularly Rakhee Gulzar, who delivers a strong performance as Shobha, a woman torn between her love for her husband and the pressures of the new lifestyle. Shashi Kapoor, as usual, gives a subtle yet strong portrayal of Balraj, a man fighting to regain his lost glory. Rekha impresses with her infectious charm and her chemistry with Ranjeet is delightful to watch.
The film has some catchy and memorable songs, including "Dil Dhoondta Hai", "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana", and "Holi Ke Din". Baseraa received critical acclaim for its powerful storyline, powerful performances, and sensitive portrayal of the struggles faced by a family in a time of crisis.
Overall, Baseraa is a must-watch for lovers of Indian cinema. With its timeless storyline and superb performances, it continues to be a classic even after four decades.
