Band of Angels is a 1957 American drama film that centers around the story of Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo), a young girl who was raised as a privileged, southern belle on a plantation in the pre-Civil War American South. Upon the sudden death of her father, Amantha discovers that she is, in fact, the daughter of a slave and is subsequently sold into slavery herself. Purchased by Hamish Bond (Clark Gable), a wealthy plantation owner, Amantha becomes embroiled in a complicated and tumultuous relationship with her new owner.
As the Civil War breaks out, Amantha and Hamish must navigate not only their own romance but also the larger societal upheavals and conflicts that threaten to tear them apart.
Sidney Poitier co-stars in the film as Rau-Ru, a fellow slave who becomes Amantha's ally and confidant.
Throughout the movie, themes of racism, classism, and gender inequality are explored as Amantha struggles to assert her own agency and reclaim her freedom amidst the chaos of war and the oppressive structures of Southern society.
The film features sweeping cinematography and an epic score that underscores the emotional intensity and high stakes of the story. The performances of the three leads - Gable, De Carlo, and Poitier - are all nuanced and complex, bringing depth and dimensionality to their characters and the relationships between them.
Band of Angels is ultimately a powerful and stirring narrative about love, courage, and the fight for freedom and justice in a world fraught with injustice and oppression.
Band of Angels is a 1957 adventure movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5.
