Banana Island Ghost is a Nigerian romantic-comedy film that was released in 2017. The movie tells the story of a young woman, Zara (played by Damilola Adegbite), who dies in a car accident but has the opportunity to return to life if she can make a man fall in love with her. This task becomes all the more difficult for Zara since she is now a ghost and cannot be seen by the living.
The story takes place on Banana Island, a wealthy and exclusive neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria. Here Zara wanders as a spirit frequently scaring off anyone who comes near her. She is given a deadline of three days to find someone who loves her from within before her soul is dragged down to eternal damnation. The man Zara must win over is Hammed (played by Patrick Diabuah), a wealthy businessman who is facing some financial difficulties at the time. He is running against time and needs to close a deal that will turn his fortunes around. Zara's attempts to make him fall in love with her lead her on a wild adventure, filled with comic incidents, rib-cracking moments, and unexpected twists.
Another character in the movie is Roxy (played by Bimbo Ademoye), Zara's best friend who is mourning her loss. Roxy takes it upon herself to get Zara back into her body, but she must do it before the three-day deadline is over. Ozzy Agu plays the role of the angel, who appears to guide and make sure that Zara follows the rules of the game.
Banana Island Ghost is a romantic-comedy movie that has a unique storyline, different from what is obtainable in most contemporary Nigerian films. The superpowers that are attributed to Zara and the support she gets from her ghostly friends add to the originality of the film. Unlike the usual Nollywood movies, the film is well directed, with good music and cinematography.
The film is directed by BB Sasore, who is best known for directing the crime thriller film, Before 30. Banana Island Ghost received the award for Best Comedy Film at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards. The film is produced by Biola Alabi and is distributed by FilmOne Distribution.
The cast of Banana Island Ghost is a mix of known and unknown actors, but they all perform their roles well. Damilola Adegbite's acting is superb as she takes on the role of a woman who goes from being alive to being a ghost. She brings humor and depth to her character, and her on-screen chemistry with Patrick Diabuah is impressive.
In conclusion, Banana Island Ghost is a light-hearted film that can be enjoyed by everyone. Its blend of fantasy, romance, and comedy makes it stand out from the numerous poorly executed comedies in the Nigerian movie industry. The film offers a refreshing take on what is possible in a Nollywood movie, and it is worth watching for its humor and uniqueness.
