Bad People is a dark comedy film released in 2016 that revolves around four couples, each one seemingly normal and respectable on the surface, but in reality, all have their own secrets and immoralities. The movie takes place over one fateful night when the couples' paths cross and various chaotic events ensue. Firstly, there's the nerdy and awkward Clark (Bear Badeaux) and his girlfriend, Lisa (Alexandra Turshen). They are the most innocent of the group but also the most dysfunctional. Clark is trying to propose to Lisa during their dinner at a fancy restaurant, but they keep getting interrupted and thwarted by the other couples' drama.
Next up, we have Kent (Ken Bhan) and Angela (Anne Lane). Kent is a slimy conman who has convinced Angela to invest all her money into a get-rich-quick scheme. Angela is obsessed with looking perfect and tries to keep up with the other more glamorous women in the group. Kent and Angela are the sleaziest and most unlikable couple in the film, creating the most frictions for the other characters.
Then there's the manipulative and controlling couple, Bob (Ellie Church) and Wendy (Alexandria Storm). They are the power-hungry duo who enjoy dominating others, especially those they see as weaker. Bob is a successful businessman, thinking only about his career, while Wendy is his submissive wife who tries to please him by enforcing his rules on others.
Finally, there's Piper (Maria Falgione) and Darren (Chris Greene), the most likable couple of the group. Piper is a fun-loving, high-energy woman, and Darren is a lovable doofus who enjoys life with childlike wonder. Darren's innocence proves to be his fatal flaw as he gets caught up in the other couples' antics.
Bad People is a movie that gleefully pushes the boundaries of darkness and immoral behavior while still managing to keep the audience laughing. The film is directed and written by Alex Petrovitch, who does an excellent job keeping the audience engaged with the characters while building momentum for the final act, which includes plenty of twists and turns.
The performances of the cast are a highlight of this film. Bear Badeaux is funny as the nerdy and anxious Clark, and Alexandra Turshen is excellent as the long-suffering Lisa. Ken Bhan is sleazy and conniving as Kent, and Anne Lane brings the laughs as the vain Angela. Ellie Church shines as Bob, the manipulative alpha dog of the group, and Alexandria Storm is excellent as his subservient wife, Wendy. Maria Falgione and Chris Greene do a fantastic job as the most likable couple, Piper and Darren, adding humor and heart to the story.
What sets Bad People apart from other dark comedies is that, despite how reprehensible the characters are, we still find ourselves rooting for them. The filmmakers do an excellent job of showing the humanity in these characters, even as they lie, cheat, and manipulate their way through the story. Additionally, the film manages to tackle several heavyweight themes such as greed, adultery, and jealousy without taking itself too seriously.
Bad People is a great comedy that will keep you entertained for its full 80 minutes runtime. The characters are outrageous, and the plot is hilarious, with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged until the end. If you're in the mood for a raunchy, dark comedy with plenty of laughs, Bad People is definitely worth checking out.
