Bad Movie is a 1997 South Korean documentary film, directed by Jang Sun-woo. The film centers on Seoul, the capital of the country, and presents a picture of the everyday lifestyles of South Korea's "bad kids" - children who have chosen to lead delinquent lifestyles that are now captured on film for all to see. At the set of the documentary, which is broken up into various episodes, viewers meet a group of Korean teens who go by various nicknames such as Mr. Potatohead and Douchebag. These teens are shown committing crimes within society and filmed in the process of such acts, some of which range from the robbing of a drunken businessman to the filming of multiple male teens making explicit advances to a young girl (who is obviously drunk when this occurs). On other occasions, scenes are filmed with the teens simply hanging out on the streets, talking about life and surrounded by a culture of drugs and fights.
In the midst of the crime (and filming of the crimes), the teens casually retell stories of broken homes and broken dreams that have led them towards this lifestyle and in many cases, homelessness. Suicide is brought into the film when some teens even express contemplating taking their own lives. In one scene, a breakdancing teen attempts to commit suicide by swallowing a whole roll of toilet paper for example. Others tell stories of getting a "rise" out of taking part in these acts of debauchery.
All of the scripts and filmwork for this film were originally submitted by the teens and then put together by the director, Jang Sun-woo. For his efforts, Bad Movie won prestigious film awards at both the 1997 Tokyo (JPN) and Pusan (KOR) Film Festivals.
