Backroad is a thriller/drama movie from 2012 starring Matthew Carter, Greg Dean, and Elizabeth McCain. It was directed by Phillip Montgomery and is set in rural America, where three teenagers embark on a road trip that ends up becoming a desperate fight for survival. The story starts with Travis, played by Matthew Carter, deciding on a whim to take his best friend, Nate (Greg Dean), and Nate's girlfriend, Krystal (Elizabeth McCain), on a road trip to visit his estranged father's farm. However, things start to go sideways soon after they hit the road. They get lost on backroads and, while trying to find their way back, they run into a strange man named Darryl, who seems to be hiding something. As night falls and the group continues their journey, tensions rise and it becomes clear that Darryl might be a danger to them.
The movie then takes a darker turn when their car breaks down, and they are forced to spend the night in the middle of nowhere. As they try to make the best of the situation and find a place to sleep, they stumble upon an old farmhouse that seems to be abandoned. However, as they soon discover, the place is far from abandoned. The trio quickly realizes that they are not alone and that the people living in the farmhouse are not friendly.
What follows is a tense and thrilling fight for survival as Travis, Nate, and Krystal try to escape the farmhouse and the people living there. The group faces numerous obstacles and challenges, but they manage to stay together and support each other in their efforts to make it out alive.
Backroad is a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout its runtime. It's a testament to the effectiveness of low-budget, independent movies when they are well-done. The movie is well-acted, and the tension is palpable from the start. The visuals and sound design are also effectively employed to create a sense of unease and isolation for the characters.
Matthew Carter is compelling as the leader of the group, Travis. He is the one who takes them on this journey, and he is also the one who must fight to keep them together and alive. Greg Dean plays the role of Travis's best friend, Nate. He is the more laid-back of the group, but he rises to the occasion when necessary. Elizabeth McCain plays Krystal, Nate's girlfriend. She is the glue that keeps the group together and offers a level head when things get tough.
The villains in the movie are also well-played. The group stumbles upon a family that is determined to do whatever it takes to keep them from leaving the farmhouse. These characters are both eerie and menacing, and they create a palpable sense of danger for our trio.
Overall, Backroad is a movie that is worth checking out if you enjoy tense thrillers with a rural setting. It's a well-executed thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end. The movie doesn't rely on cheap jump scares or gore, but rather, it builds tension through its characters and setting. If you're looking for a movie to keep you on the edge of your seat, Backroad is definitely worth checking out.
