Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 science-fiction adventure movie that continues the story of Marty McFly and Doc Brown on their time-traveling adventures. This movie is the second installment in the Back to the Future trilogy and picks up where the first film left off. The movie starts with an obligatory recap of the first movie, showing us the last few scenes of the original film. This opening sets up the premise and provides an introduction for anyone who has not yet seen the first movie. After this initial recap, we see that the plot of Back to the Future Part II is starting to take shape.
The plot of the movie resumes with Marty McFly and Doc Brown taking off from 1985 to visit the year 2015. The duo has only one mission, to stop Marty's son from making a grave mistake. Soon, they find themselves in a different timeline, where Biff Tannen, Marty's school bully, has become a wealthy and powerful businessman. Biff has managed to obtain a sports almanac, which provides the results of every major sports event for several decades, and with this information, he plans to make a fortune through gambling.
The 2015 version of Marty McFly is plagued by problems in his personal life, where he is struggling to balance his rock band with his job as a deliveries boy. He is also dealing with the realization that the future has not turned out the way he thought it would. After obtaining the almanac, Biff goes back in time to 1955, to give it to a young version of himself, which leads to an alternative timeline where Biff is the richest man in the world and the city of Hill Valley is a dystopian wasteland.
Marty and Doc are informed about the changes to the timeline and attempt to go back to 1955 to get the almanac before Biff can use it. Little do they know that their past selves are also in 1955 and they could be jeopardizing their existence by interfering with the past.
Back to the Future Part II manages to keep the pace provided by the first movie and even manages to add more action and suspense to the mix. The film's special effects are also ahead of their time and continue to hold up remarkably well to this day. The futuristic world that is portrayed in 2015 is filled with technological advancements that are made believable thanks to the use of practical effects.
The performances delivered by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd are once again top-notch, with their easy chemistry and timing making the audience forget about the implausibility of time travel. The supporting cast also does their part in delivering an enjoyable experience, with Lea Thompson's double role as Marty's mother and grandmother being a particular highlight. Additionally, Tom Wilson's portrayal of Biff Tannen may even be better than in the original movie, as he manages to capture the nuance of two completely different versions of Biff.
In the end, Back to the Future Part II offers an entertaining and satisfying continuation of the original story with the addition of a few twists and turns. The movie uses the established story elements and world-building to create something engaging and unique. Overall, Back to the Future Part II is a worthy extension of the original movie that does not disappoint its fans.
