Back in the Day is a 2005 drama film, directed by James Hunter and written by Hunter, Michael Raffanello, and Reggie Rock Bythewood. The film stars Joe Morton, Ja Rule, and Norman Grant in leading roles, along with Ving Rhames, Tia Carrere, and Pam Grier in supporting roles. The film revolves around Reggie Cooper (Ja Rule) who is a young man living in Queens, New York, in the mid-1980s. Reggie is an aspiring rapper, but he also works at the local pizza joint to make ends meet. His life changes when he reunites with his childhood friend, J-Bone (Toby Smith), who is now a drug dealer. J-Bone invites Reggie to join him in the drug trade and make some quick money.
Despite initial reluctance, Reggie ultimately decides to join J-Bone and becomes a successful drug dealer himself, earning a lot of money quickly, and living a lavish lifestyle. However, his newfound success and money come at a price, and he soon realizes that the drug game is not his true calling. Things take a turn for the worse when he gets involved in a turf war with a rival gang, putting his life and the life of his loved ones in danger.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Hudson (Joe Morton), a dedicated police officer, is investigating the drug trade in the neighborhood and is determined to bring down the local drug lords. Hudson is also dealing with his personal issues, including a rocky relationship with his wife (Tia Carrere) and a complicated history with his ex-partner-turned-drug-dealer, Angelo (Ving Rhames).
As Reggie's involvement in the drug trade deepens, he becomes more conflicted and must ultimately decide where his loyalties lie. Along the way, he must confront the consequences of his actions and decide whether he wants to continue down the path of crime or turn his life around before it's too late.
The film's strength lies in its portrayal of the gritty and violent world of drug dealing, as well as its depiction of the struggles faced by those who attempt to leave that life behind. Back in the Day also explores issues of loyalty, friendship, and the pursuit of the American Dream.
The performances of the leading actors are noteworthy, particularly Ja Rule, who brings a raw intensity to his role as Reggie. Joe Morton is also impressive as the dedicated police officer, and Ving Rhames is suitably menacing as the ruthless drug lord.
Overall, Back in the Day is a compelling drama with strong performances and a gritty portrayal of the drug trade in 1980s New York. The film offers a powerful commentary on the consequences of choices made and lived by the main characters. While not without its flaws, it remains an engaging and thought-provoking watch, held in high regard by those who view it.
