Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher is a 2014 direct-to-video animated superhero film produced by Marvel Entertainment and Madhouse, and distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows the story of two unique heroes â Black Widow and Punisher â as they are forced to work together to combat a dangerous new enemy.
The film starts with a prologue set in Lebanon, where Black Widow (voiced by Jennifer Carpenter) is on a mission to prevent a terrorist attack. There, she meets the Punisher (voiced by Brian Bloom), who is on his own mission to stop the same terrorists. The two work together to prevent the attack but their different approaches to the mission lead to a brief clash between them.
After returning to the United States, Black Widow is called to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters to meet with Director Nick Fury. Fury (voiced by John Eric Bentley) informs her that a newly developed cyber weapon has been stolen from S.H.I.E.L.D. custody by a group of terrorists known as "Leviathan". He tasks Black Widow with finding and apprehending the person responsible for the theft.
Black Widow's investigation leads her to Tokyo, where she encounters the Punisher. The Punisher, who is also in Tokyo working on a separate mission, is not pleased to see Black Widow again. However, when they discover that their missions are connected, they are forced to work together once more.
As Black Widow and Punisher continue their investigation, they discover that the thief of the cyber weapon is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is now working with Leviathan. The two heroes set out to take down the agent and the terrorist organization before they can use the cyber weapon to cause destruction on a global scale.
While the premise of the story is not entirely groundbreaking, the film does have its strengths. One of the main highlights of the film is the dynamic between Black Widow and Punisher. The two are polar opposite characters, which leads to plenty of clashes and tension throughout the film. Black Widow is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and is a highly-trained spy while the Punisher is a ruthless vigilante who has no qualms about killing his targets. Their different approaches and viewpoints provide the film with an interesting dynamic that keeps the audience engaged and invested.
Another strength of the film is its animation. The film was produced by Madhouse, a Japanese animation studio known for their work on popular anime series such as Death Note and One Punch Man. The animation style is fluid and dynamic, with fight scenes that are visually impressive and well-choreographed.
The voice cast for the film is also noteworthy. Jennifer Carpenter and Brian Bloom both deliver solid performances as Black Widow and Punisher, respectively. The chemistry and banter between the two characters are entertaining and believable. John Eric Bentley provides a strong voice for Nick Fury, capturing the character's no-nonsense attitude and authority.
One area where the film falls short is its pacing. The film is only 83 minutes long, which may seem like a decent length for an animated feature, but it feels like the story could have been fleshed out more. There are moments where it feels like the film rushes through certain plot points, which can leave the audience feeling disoriented.
Overall, Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher is an enjoyable animated superhero film that provides a fun and engaging story. The dynamic between Black Widow and Punisher is a highlight, and the animation is visually impressive. While it does have its flaws, it's worth a watch for any Marvel fan looking for a new adventure within the MCU.
