Automatons is a 2006 sci-fi movie directed by James Felix McKenney. Set in a dystopian future, the film tells the story of a group of robots who are the only ones alive after a catastrophic event destroyed all human beings. The robots, who were created to serve humanity, now find themselves alone in a desolate world. Led by the beautiful and intelligent android, Dee Dee (played by Christine Spencer), they make their way through the ruins of civilization, searching for any signs of life.

As they journey through the barren landscape, the robots encounter a variety of challenges and obstacles, including malfunctioning systems, hostile machines, and the harsh realities of their own mortality. Along the way, they also encounter a mysterious figure known as the Caretaker (played by Angus Scrimm), who seems to hold the key to their survival.

The storyline of Automatons is a philosophical exploration of what it means to be alive, presenting the robots' struggle to survive as a mirror of human frailty and vulnerability. The film examines themes of loneliness, consciousness, identity, and morality, asking fundamental questions about the nature of existence and the purpose of life.

At its core, the movie is an homage to classic sci-fi and horror movies of the 1950s and 60s, with a retro-futuristic aesthetic that evokes the golden age of science fiction cinema. The movie's art direction is particularly noteworthy, with a striking use of black and white visuals that give the film a post-apocalyptic, film noir feel.

The performances by the three main actors of the film, Christine Spencer, Angus Scrimm, and Brenda Cooney, are impressive. Spencer delivers a nuanced and captivating performance as the android Dee Dee, playing the character with poise and emotional depth. Scrimm's portrayal of the Caretaker is both enigmatic and haunting, lending the film an eerie sense of dread. Cooney delivers a standout performance as the voice of the central computer system, imbuing the character with a sense of coldness and detachment.

Despite its small budget, Automatons manages to create an immersive and believable world, thanks to the excellent cinematography, sound design, and special effects. The movie's soundtrack, composed by Timothy Fife, is also noteworthy, with a haunting and atmospheric mixture of synths, percussion, and ambient sounds.

Overall, Automatons is a thought-provoking and visually striking movie that offers a fresh take on the sci-fi genre. It is a must-see for fans of classic cinema and anyone interested in exploring deep philosophical questions about the human condition.
