Assault Girls is a Japanese science fiction movie released in 2009 directed by Mamoru Oshii. The movie is set in a virtual world called Avalon, where four different female players, each with their unique personalities and abilities, come together to beat a giant sand-dwelling monster. The four characters are Gray (Yoshikazu Fujiki), who is a skilled marksman; Lucifer (Rinko Kikuchi), who specializes in close combat and has a weaponed skirt-like system that acts as a shield, Colonel (Meisa Kuroki), who is an all-rounder with long-range rifles and explosives, and finally, the hopelessly clumsy and inexperienced Jäger (Assault Lily Bouquet).

The story begins with the four women coming together, with each of their reasons for playing the game. They all set out on a mission to kill a legendary creature called the Elder God. The women must work together, utilizing their individual strengths to overcome numerous obstacles and strange, unknown creatures, including the giant monster known as "Sandalphon."

The majority of Assault Girls scenes are shot in a vast and harsh desert setting, with futuristic ruins scattered throughout the environment, which offers a barren and almost apocalyptic appeal. Additionally, the outfits worn by each character, along with their weapons, are elegant and unique. The outfits are appropriate to each character's attack type and fighting style, with Lucifer's complicated skirt and Colonel's high-tech military gear standing out in particular.

Without revealing too much, the movie's characters and atmosphere are appropriately twisted, providing the perfect setting for the protagonist's quest to battle the monstrous, sandborne creatures.

The movie's special effects are spectacular and highly impressive, and, while this might not be everyone's cup of tea, the editing is highly stylized, with light-flares and other effects interspersed throughout the scenes. While some might be put off by this, others find it elevates the movie's otherworldly appeal and adds to the playing field's virtual nature.

Overall, Assault Girls is an intriguing, visually stunning movie. It may not be for everyone, given its highly stylized editing, but it's a must-see for those who enjoy science fiction movies that provides an immersive virtual experience. The movie's desert setting gives the story a unique atmosphere, making the monster battles more impressive and intense. The game-like system that the four women play is relatable to gamers, making the audience feel more involved and invested in their triumphs and hardships. Despite this, the film's most impressive feature lies in Rinko Kikuchi's stunning portrayal of the top-scoring gamer character, Lucifer.

Assault Girls engages viewers in the world of gaming, artfully translating the gaming world into a cinematic experience. It's a groundbreaking science fiction movie and an impressive achievement that nicely captures the virtual game experience. The film's special effects are exceptional, and the virtual nature of the game-world makes it stand out from other action movies in the genre.

Fans of science-fiction movies will undoubtedly find a sci-fi goldmine in Assault Girls, thanks to its unique visuals and likeable characters. It's thrilling, engaging, and visually stunning, even if there are small shortcomings within the story. Though this type of movie may not appeal to everyone, but its intense battle scenes and striking visuals will be sure to captivate most viewers.
