Apna Desh is a Bollywood movie released in 1972, starring the legendary actor Rajesh Khanna, along with Mumtaz Askari and Om Prakash in lead roles. The movie is a story about a young man named Anil (Rajesh Khanna), who dreams of making his country Apna Desh (his own country) a better place. The movie starts with Anil, who is the son of a wealthy businessman, visiting a slum area to meet his friend Raja (played by Rakesh Roshan), who is a social worker. Anil is moved by the poverty and distress of people living in the slum area, and he decides to help them by building a hospital there. However, his father disapproves of his actions and stops funding his project. This does not deter Anil, who sets out to fulfill his dream by himself.
Anil finds an ally in the form of Deepak (played by Om Prakash), a doctor who is sympathetic to his cause. Together, they start the construction of the hospital in the slum area. However, they soon discover that the local land mafia is against their plan and tries to stop them. The situation worsens when Anil's father is murdered, and he is framed for the crime.
Anil's troubles don't end there. He also finds himself at loggerheads with his childhood friend Sunita (played by Mumtaz), who is now a famous dancer. Sunita disapproves of Anil's plan to build a hospital in the slum area and thinks he is wasting his time and money. However, as the story unfolds, Anil's perseverance and courage inspire Sunita, and she joins his cause.
The movie explores various themes such as poverty, corruption, and social inequality prevalent during the time of its release. It also highlights the importance of standing up for oneself, fighting for one's beliefs, and working towards the betterment of society.
Apart from the powerful storyline, the movie's music is also worth a mention. The songs are composed by R. D. Burman and written by Anand Bakshi. One of the most popular songs of the movie is "Duniya Mein Logon Ko", which is a beautiful melody that laments the apathy of society towards the poor and the downtrodden.
The performances by the actors are commendable. Rajesh Khanna shines in his role as Anil, a man determined to make a difference in society. He effortlessly portrays the emotions of a man fighting against all odds and striving for a noble cause. Mumtaz delivers a solid performance as Sunita, initially against Anil's project but later joining his fight.
Om Prakash, who plays the role of Deepak, a doctor supportive of Anil's cause, adds a touch of humor to the movie. His character brings in some light moments in an otherwise intense movie.
In conclusion, Apna Desh is a must-watch for those who enjoy socially conscious movies with powerful performances and beautiful music. The movie delivers a powerful message of fighting against social evils and working towards a better tomorrow. It is a timeless classic that still holds relevance in today's world.
