Apache Rifles is a 1964 Western movie directed by William Witney and starring the legendary actor Audie Murphy, Michael Dante, and Linda Lawson. The movie is set in the West after the Civil War, where a small group of US Cavalry troops sends a dispatch to Fort Winston to request reinforcements to fight against the Apache tribe, which has been raiding local settlements. The dispatch is led by Lieutenant Colton (Audie Murphy), a battle-hardened veteran who fought on the side of the Confederacy.

As the dispatch reaches Fort Winston, Colton meets his former superior, General Miles, who commands the fort. Colton is surprised to see General Miles, who he thought was dead from the war. The two men have a strained relationship as Colton feels that his former commanding officer left him for dead during the war.

As the two men argue, the Apache tribe attacks the fort, killing many soldiers and civilians. General Miles orders Colton to lead a detachment of soldiers to find out why the Apache tribe has been raiding local settlements, and to put an end to it. Colton accepts the mission, and with a small group of soldiers and a young woman named Jerry (Linda Lawson), who was captured by the Apache tribe, they set off to find the tribe's stronghold.

The journey is grueling, as they encounter numerous obstacles, including treacherous mountains, raging rivers, and the desert heat. Along the way, they encounter a pacifist preacher, who challenges Colton's beliefs about war and violence.

Eventually, they reach the Apache stronghold, where they find out the truth about the tribe's motivations for raiding the settlements. Colton must make a difficult decision, as he must choose between his duty as a soldier and his sense of honor and justice.

The movie is notable for its portrayal of the Apache tribe, which is shown in a sympathetic light, rather than as savage and bloodthirsty savages. The movie attempts to show both sides of the conflict fairly, and the audience is given a glimpse into the harsh reality of life in the West during that time.

Audie Murphy delivers a solid performance as Lieutenant Colton, a man torn between his past and his duty. Michael Dante is also excellent as the Apache leader, who has his own reasons for waging war against the US army. Linda Lawson provides a charming presence as the captured woman, Jerry.

The movie features some impressive action scenes, including a thrilling gun battle between the US soldiers and the Apache tribe. The movie also boasts a memorable score by composer Richard LaSalle, which perfectly captures the mood of the film.

Overall, Apache Rifles is an entertaining and well-made Western movie that offers a refreshing take on the genre. It's a movie that is both thought-provoking and action-packed, and a must-watch for fans of classic Westerns.

Apache Rifles is a 1964 western with a runtime of 1 hour and 31 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4.
