Angel on My Shoulder from 1946 is a classic black and white film directed by Archie Mayo. The movie stars Paul Muni, Anne Baxter, and Claude Rains in the lead roles. It is a unique tale of betrayal, redemption and a strange twist of fate. The movie starts with a gangster named Eddie Kagle, played by Paul Muni, being shot dead by his own men. Upon his arrival in Hell, he is greeted by Nick, the devil's aide, who reveals that he had been expecting him to arrive sooner or later. However, Nick tells him that he cannot go to Hell, as his file shows him to be a man of virtue with no evil deeds to his name. Eddie is confused and bewildered by this, as he knows he lived an evil life. Still, he is shown a childhood incident where he saved a drowning boy, and this makes him believe that there is hope for him yet.
In an attempt to seek redemption, Eddie makes a deal with Nick. He asks the devil to send him back to Earth to seek revenge on his former partner, whom he believes betrayed him. The devil agrees to this, but he has his own sinister intentions. Once Eddie is back on Earth, he is surprised to find himself in the body of a judge named Frederick Parker, a decent man who is getting married to Barbara Foster, played by Anne Baxter. Eddie starts to use the judge's body to his advantage, to achieve his ultimate goal of revenge.
However, unknown to Eddie, Nick has his own agenda, and he is manipulating Eddie into doing his bidding. Nick's ultimate plan is to turn Eddie into the most evil gangster the world has ever known. To accomplish this, Nick sends Fletcher, one of Eddie's old gangster friends, played by Claude Rains, to find Eddie and to help him achieve his goals.
As Eddie continues his mission, he starts to develop feelings for Barbara, which complicates his plans. He realizes he wants to be with her but is afraid that she may reject him if she knew who he really was. In the end, the tale takes an unexpected twist, and the true identity of the judge is revealed.
The acting in the movie is superb, with Paul Muni giving an outstanding performance as the tormented Eddie, who is looking for redemption. Anne Baxter is fantastic in her portrayal of Barbara, a woman confused by her feelings for the man she loves. Claude Rains does an excellent job as Fletcher, the ultimate villain of the story.
The movie's soundtrack is equally impressive, with music that sets the mood for each scene. The cinematography is also noteworthy, with many of the scenes filmed in shadowy, film-noir style.
