If Mark Twain had lived full time in California instead of sailing down the Mississippi, perhaps this movie would have been one of his novels. An American Summer does borrow quite heavily from two of Twain's most famous works, "Tom Sawyer", and "Huckleberry Finn". This movie's plot has Tom coming to spend the summer in California with his aunt, where he quickly befriends local kid Finn. Finn teaches Tom how to blend in with the locals by surfing. Fans of the novels will quickly spot thinly disguised versions of their characters here, including the villainous Injun Joe. But will Tom win Becky Thatcher's heart by summer's end?
An American Summer is a 1991 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.4.
