Ammonite is a 2020 historical-drama film that tells the story of a remarkable and unconventional friendship between two women in the 19th century. Set in the seaside town of Lyme Regis in England, the film revolves around the life of Mary Anning (played by Kate Winslet), a renowned and accomplished paleontologist who spends her days scouring the rocky beaches for fossils.

Despite her expertise, Mary's work often goes unacknowledged and she struggles to make ends meet. Her life takes a surprising turn when a wealthy gentleman, Roderick Murchison (James McArdle), hires her to take care of his wife, Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan), who is suffering from depression.

At first, Mary is skeptical of Charlotte, who seems distant and uninterested in her surroundings. However, as they start spending more time together, they form a deep and intimate bond. Mary introduces Charlotte to the rudiments of fossil hunting and they begin to explore the beaches together, unearthing fascinating specimens and discussing their theories about prehistoric life.

As their friendship blossoms into something deeper, Mary and Charlotte find themselves drawn to each other in ways they had never anticipated. However, their relationship is tested by social conventions, class differences, and their own personal struggles.

Kate Winslet delivers a knockout performance as Mary Anning, portraying her with a quiet yet powerful intensity that conveys the character's intelligence, determination, and vulnerability. Saoirse Ronan is equally impressive as Charlotte, bringing a complex and nuanced portrayal of a woman struggling to find meaning and purpose in her life.

Gemma Jones, who plays Mary's mother, adds depth and complexity to the film, providing a glimpse into the various challenges and obstacles that Mary has had to overcome in order to pursue her passion.

Director Francis Lee does an excellent job of capturing the rugged beauty of the Lyme Regis coastline, using stunning visuals to convey the harsh realities and sublime wonder of life in the 19th century. The editing is masterful, seamlessly weaving together the different elements of the story into a rich and compelling narrative.

Ammonite is a beautifully crafted film that explores themes of love, identity, and the quest for knowledge. It is not just a love story between two women, but a poignant and thought-provoking meditation on the human experience.

Ammonite is a 2020 romance movie. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.5 and a MetaScore of 72.
