Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel is a 2009 American live-action/computer-animated musical comedy film directed by Betty Thomas and written by Jon Vitti, Jonathan Aibel, and Glenn Berger. It is a sequel to the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. The movie stars Jason Lee, David Cross, and Zachary Levi.

After a worldwide tour, the pop sensations Alvin, Simon, and Theodore return home to the familiar surroundings of their treehouse with their devoted human companion Dave Seville (Jason Lee). However, their lives are soon turned upside down when Dave is injured in a freak accident and cannot take care of the trio. Unable to imagine life without their beloved Dave, the chipmunks are sent to attend high school with Dave’s cousin Toby (Zachary Levi).

The chipmunks find themselves in a new environment where they must navigate the ups and downs of teenage life while also attempting to save their school’s music program. Along the way, the trio encounters a rival group of female chipmunks known as The Chipettes who are also vying for a spot in the music program.

As the story unfolds, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore must learn to balance their newfound teenage independence with the importance of friendship and loyalty. They also face the challenge of defeating evil music mogul Ian Hawke (David Cross) who seeks to exploit The Chipettes’ talent for his own profit.

One of the standout parts of the movie is undoubtedly the music, which features both classic and contemporary pop hits. The chipmunks and The Chipettes perform covers of songs such as “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”. The film also includes original music, such as the song “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)”.

The movie is also notable for its impressive use of computer animation. The chipmunks and The Chipettes are seamlessly integrated into real-world settings, giving the impression that they are physically interacting with the human characters.

The film’s cast delivers solid performances, particularly Jason Lee who reprises his role as Dave. Newcomers Zachary Levi and David Cross also elevate the movie with their comedic talent. The chipmunks and The Chipettes are brought to life through the voice acting of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Christina Applegate, Anna Faris, and Amy Poehler.

Overall, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel is an enjoyable family-friendly movie that delivers laughs and catchy tunes. It addresses important themes such as friendship, loyalty, and the importance of following one’s dreams. Fans of the original movie and animation in general will undoubtedly find much to love in this sequel.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel is a 2009 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 28 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.6 and a MetaScore of 41.
