Mal is a brilliant computer scientist who has had a run of difficult luck recently. A turn in his fortunes comes when he creates a computer program that's able to interact with a person in a convincingly human way. He hypothesizes that it will be just as easy for a woman to fall in love with the computer as with a real person, and he decides to conduct an experiment to that end. Samantha is the woman he chooses, and he has her courted by both the computer and a real person, but a change in the experiment complicates matters.
