Aiyaary is a 2018 Indian crime thriller film directed by Neeraj Pandey and starring Sidharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee, and Rakul Preet Singh. The film follows the story of a young army officer, played by Sidharth Malhotra, who goes rogue after finding out about a corruption scandal in the army. The movie begins with Major Jai Bakshi (played by Sidharth Malhotra) discovering a scam involving a large sum of money within the army. However, when he tries to bring the matter to the attention of his superiors, he is met with resistance and is advised to stay quiet. Fed up with the corruption in the army, Jai decides to go rogue and takes his loyal friend and commanding officer Colonel Abhay Singh (played by Manoj Bajpayee) by surprise.
The film then cuts to a series of events where Abhay Singh is seen chasing Jai Bakshi, trying to catch him before he can reveal the secrets of the scam. Each time Abhay gets close to Jai, he manages to escape through his resourcefulness and his deep understanding of the military.
The film's plot is filled with twists and turns, making it a watchable thriller. Along the way, the movie also touches on issues such as political corruption, army surveillance, money laundering, and illegal arms trade.
Manoj Bajpayee delivers an absolutely brilliant performance as Colonel Abhay Singh, who excellently portrays the image of a patriotic soldier who will stop at nothing to protect his country. Sidharth Malhotra, on the other hand, offers a refreshing take on the role of an army officer. The young actor convincingly portrays the nuances of a rebellious and conflicted character who has lost faith in the system he has been serving. Rakul Preet Singh also puts in a decent performance as Sonia, a software engineer who plays a pivotal role in the plot.
The film's pacing keeps the viewers engaged, with the runtime being close to 2 and a half hours. The movie's visuals present a stark contrast in the rustic terrain of Delhi and the plush environs of London. The action sequences, though not spectacular, are well-executed and realistic.
The music of Aiyaary, composed by Rochak Kohli and Ankit Tiwari, is well-suited for the film, with tracks like "Lae Dooba" and "Yaad Hai" leaving a lasting impression.
Overall, Aiyaary is a movie that tackles a heavy topic in an entertaining manner. With engaging performances from its lead actors, a well-crafted story, and a gripping screenplay, the film is a good watch for those who are into crime thrillers.
