After the Civil War ended in 1865, the difficult task of Reconstruction began. Rejoining the defeated South with the Union was not an easy undertaking. This History Channel documentary deals with some of the worst events of the Reconstruction years. Interviews with historians are mixed with depictions of race riots, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, acts of violence, and the extreme hardships suffered by a defeated populace.
