After Effect is a 2012 thriller movie directed by David McElroy and starring Daniel Baldwin, Tuckie White and Matthew Lucki. The movie follows a group of college students who are enlisted by the US army to participate in a secret experiment involving a powerful new drug known as Styx. The drug is said to increase cognitive abilities, but things take a dark turn as the students begin to experience side effects that lead them down a dangerous path.

The film begins with a prologue set in Afghanistan, where a group of US soldiers is sent on a mission to retrieve a mysterious briefcase. The mission is a success but ends in tragedy, with only one soldier, Mark (Lucki), surviving. Fast forward to the present day, and Mark is a college student struggling to cope with the trauma of his experience. He is befriended by fellow students Anna (White), Dara (Samantha Lester) and Judd (Ricardo Andres) who are all taking part in an army-sponsored experiment involving a new drug called Styx.

The students are given a dose of Styx and are told that it will enhance their cognitive abilities, allowing them to learn and retain information more quickly. They are also told that the drug is completely safe and that there are no side effects. However, as the students begin to take the drug, they start to experience strange and terrifying hallucinations that affect their behavior and their ability to function normally.

Mark is the first to experience the dark side of Styx, and as he becomes increasingly unstable, he begins to see visions of his dead comrades from the Afghanistan mission. Anna, Dara and Judd also start to suffer from hallucinations, and before long, they are all struggling to separate reality from their drug-induced visions.

As the students become more and more unstable, tensions rise and the experiment begins to turn into a nightmare. The army superiors overseeing the experiment, including Captain Burke (Baldwin), have their own agenda, and it becomes clear that they will stop at nothing to keep the true nature of the drug a secret.

The film is a tense, thought-provoking thriller that explores themes of trauma, addiction and the dangerous nature of scientific experimentation. The performances from the cast are strong, with Lucki delivering a powerful portrayal of a soldier struggling with PTSD and the effects of the drug. White, Lester and Andres are all convincing as the college students caught up in a dangerous experiment, and Baldwin is suitably menacing as the army captain with his own agenda.

The direction and cinematography are also strong, with effective use of lighting and camera angles to create a sense of claustrophobia and unease. The film's score, composed by Chris Ridenhour, adds an atmospheric layer to the proceedings, ramping up the tension in key moments.

Overall, After Effect is a gripping, unsettling thriller that explores some weighty themes and hammers home the dangers of unchecked scientific experimentation. It's a sobering reminder of the need for ethical oversight in scientific research and the potential consequences of failing to do so.

After Effect is a 2013 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.1.
