Adrenalin: Fear the Rush is a science fiction thriller movie from 1996. It stars Christopher Lambert, Natasha Henstridge, and Norbert Weisser, and is directed by Albert Pyun. The movie is set in a future where a deadly virus has taken over society, and a cure remains elusive. Amidst this chaos, a group of individuals find themselves in a high-security prison, isolated from the rest of civilization. As they struggle to survive in this hostile environment, they discover that they are not alone, and that the virus has created new and terrifying threats that threaten to destroy them all.
The movie is set in the year 2007, a bleak future where a mysterious virus has swept across the world, killing millions of people and leaving the survivors in constant fear of infection. The only hope for a cure lies in a high-security research facility, where a team of scientists is working tirelessly to find a solution. However, their efforts are hampered by a group of criminals who break into the facility and steal the last remaining vial of the virus, intending to sell it to the highest bidder.
The criminals are apprehended by the authorities and sent to a maximum-security prison, where they are isolated from the rest of society. Among them is Lemieux (Natasha Henstridge), a beautiful thief who has a secret agenda of her own. As she tries to navigate the brutal environment of the prison, she realizes that danger lurks at every corner, and that she must stay alert if she wants to survive.
Lemieux is joined by Santos (Christopher Lambert), a former soldier who is haunted by his past, and who has resigned himself to a life behind bars. While Lemieux is eager to escape and pursue her own interests, Santos is content to stay out of trouble and serve his time. However, their lives are turned upside down when they discover that the virus has mutated inside the prison, creating new and deadly creatures that are intent on killing them all.
The movie boasts an impressive cast, with Christopher Lambert delivering a solid performance as Santos. His portrayal of a man haunted by his past is nuanced and understated, adding depth to his character. Natasha Henstridge, fresh off her breakthrough role in Species, is equally impressive as Lemieux. Her steely determination and resourcefulness make her an engaging character, and her chemistry with Lambert is palpable.
Norbert Weisser rounds out the main cast as the warden of the prison. He is suitably menacing and deranged, and his constant scheming adds an element of unpredictability to the story. The supporting cast is also strong, with standout performances from Elizabeth Barondes as the tough-as-nails prison guard, and Richard Tyson as the unhinged leader of a rival gang.
The action in the movie is fast-paced and visceral, with plenty of shootouts, car chases, and hand-to-hand combat. The futuristic setting is well-realized, with some impressive production design that lends the movie a gritty and lived-in feel. The visual effects are a bit dated by today's standards, but they hold up surprisingly well considering the movie's age.
While Adrenalin: Fear the Rush is far from perfect, it is an enjoyable slice of '90s sci-fi action. The movie's premise is intriguing, and the performances are strong enough to carry the story. It may not reach the heights of some of the classics of the genre, but it is a solid and entertaining entry that is worth checking out for fans of Christopher Lambert or Natasha Henstridge.
