Act One is a 1963 biographical drama film based on the autobiographical play of the same name by Moss Hart. Directed by Dore Schary, it stars George Hamilton, Jason Robards, and George Segal. The film tells the story of Moss Hart, a young man from a working-class family in the Bronx who dreams of becoming a playwright. With the help of his friend and collaborator, the lyricist Larry Hart, Moss sets out to make his mark on the theater world.

As Moss struggles to get his first play produced, he faces rejection after rejection from theater producers who don't understand his vision. But with the help of Larry and his supportive family, Moss never gives up on his dream and eventually achieves success with his hit play Once in a Lifetime.

Throughout the film, Moss's relationships with the people in his life are explored, including his tumultuous romance with a wealthy socialite named Dorothy Frewen and his complicated friendship with the legendary playwright George S. Kaufman. The latter, played by Jason Robards, provides some of the film's most memorable moments with his witty quips and sharp tongue.

As Moss's star rises in the theater world, he begins to experience the pitfalls of fame and fortune. He becomes estranged from Larry, who struggles with alcoholism and depression, and grows distant from his family as he becomes more focused on his career.

Despite these challenges, Moss remains committed to his craft and continues to produce successful plays until his untimely death at the age of 57.

Act One is a powerful and moving portrayal of one man's struggle to achieve his dreams against all odds. With its strong performances and insightful script, it offers a compelling glimpse into the world of theater and the sacrifices that artists make in pursuit of their passion.
