A Yellow Bird is a poignant drama film from 2016, directed by K. Rajagopal. Set against the backdrop of Singapore's gritty Changi industrial zone, the film revolves around a lonely ex-convict named Siva (Sivakumar Palakrishnan), who is struggling to deal with his past and present demons. Upon returning home, he is rejected by his estranged mother and struggles to find work, making him all the more vulnerable to the temptations of the world he left behind.

As Siva tries to get his life back on track, he becomes unexpectedly drawn to a Chinese sex worker named Chen Chen (Lu Huang) who is also struggling amidst her bleak surroundings. In spite of their cultural and linguistic differences, the two find solace in each other's company and begin to share their fears, dreams, and pain. As their relationship deepens, they find themselves embroiled in a web of prejudice, violence, and danger that threatens to destroy them both.

Throughout the film, Siva is haunted by memories of his childhood, his time in prison, and his violent tendencies. His relationships with the people around him are strained and volatile, and his struggle to find redemption and acceptance is palpable. However, he is also fiercely loyal to those he loves, and his integrity is unwavering even in the face of danger.

The film is beautifully shot, with gritty and realistic depictions of Singapore's marginalized communities. The story is a raw and moving exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the harsh realities of contemporary society. The lead performances by Sivakumar Palakrishnan and Lu Huang are nothing short of stunning, conveying a powerful sense of isolation, desperation, and longing.

The supporting cast is also brilliant, particularly Seema Biswas, who plays Siva's mother with a haunting mix of desperation and bitterness. Other notable performances include Yeo Yann Yann as Chen Chen's protective mother, and Jo Kukathas as a compassionate social worker.

The film is not without its flaws. Some of the supporting characters lack development, and some of the plot points are frustratingly vague. However, these shortcomings do not detract from the core emotional impact of the film.

Overall, A Yellow Bird is a powerful and deeply affecting film that explores the human condition with honesty, compassion, and intelligence. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, and a reminder of the beauty and fragility of life.
