When Sara Shaw (Lacey Chabert), a hard-working and dedicated woman, gets passed up for a promotion at her job, she is devastated. Despite her hard work and dedication over the years, her boss seems not to appreciate her efforts. The only person she can turn to for comfort is her friend, Molly (Andrea Brooks), who encourages her to take a break and go home for the holidays.

Sara reluctantly agrees and heads back to her small hometown where she is greeted by her mother and sister, both of whom are excited to see her. While back home, she meets an old acquaintance, Peter Williams (Paul Greene), who is still struggling with the death of his wife. Unlike Sara, who has always been career-oriented, Peter is a small-town teacher who is looking for something to get him into the holiday spirit.

When Sara and Peter are paired up on a project for the town's Christmas festival, they quickly realize they have different ideas about what the festival is meant to be. Sara is looking for a way to boost her career by producing an extravagant festival, while Peter, who has always been passionate about community events, is more interested in making sure everyone has a good time, regardless of how many decorations are up or how expensive the gifts are.

As Sara and Peter work together, they slowly start to appreciate each other's strengths and the bond between them grows stronger. Sara learns that there are more important things in life than just work, and Peter starts to open up and enjoy the holiday season once again. But when Sara is offered her dream job, she must decide whether to stay in her hometown with Peter or return to the big city.
