A Little Thing Called Murder is a thrilling, made-for-television movie from 2006. The film is based on a true story and stars the fabulous Judy Davis as Sante Kimes, an eccentric and selfish woman with a knack for scheming and conning others for her personal gain. The story takes place in the 1980s and follows Sante and her young, impressionable son, Kenny (played by Jonathan Jackson), as they traverse across the United States, carrying out scams and frauds wherever they go. Sante is a master of disguise and manipulation, and she uses her feminine wiles to charm her victims before striking.
Early on in the film, we see Sante and Kenny posing as wealthy socialites in order to gain access to luxurious hotel rooms and extravagant dinners that they have no intention of paying for. Later, they move on to more lucrative schemes, such as selling fake securities and even committing murder.
Chelcie Ross delivers a fantastic performance as a private investigator who is hot on Sante and Kenny's trail. What follows is a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse as Sante continually manages to evade the law and stay one step ahead of her pursuer.
As the movie progresses, we see Sante's manipulation of her son be taken to the extreme as she involves him in increasingly dangerous and illegal activities. The film explores the dynamics of their relationship and the lengths to which a mother will go to protect her child (even if it means putting him in harm's way).
The acting in A Little Thing Called Murder is top-notch, with Davis in particular delivering a tour-de-force performance as Sante Kimes. She perfectly captures the character's haughty, self-assured demeanor and the twinkle in her eye that belies her deceitful nature.
The film is expertly shot and directed, with a moody, atmospheric feel that perfectly complements the dark subject matter. While the pacing can be a bit slow at times, the tension builds steadily throughout the film, culminating in a heart-pounding finale that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
A Little Thing Called Murder is a gripping crime drama that tells a fascinating true story. It's a must-see for fans of Judy Davis and anyone who loves a good true crime tale.
