In the late 1800s, a group of seven missionary women travel to remote China to try and spread Christianity to the local population. The group is led by Miss Agatha Andrews, played by Anne Bancroft, a stern and tightly wound woman who takes her religious duties extremely seriously. The group of women arrives at a small village, which is under the control of a warlord named Tunga Khan. The women take up residence in a nearby compound, which is owned by a local merchant named Mr. Wu, played by Ralph Bellamy.

Initially, the women have trouble adapting to their new surroundings, which are vastly different from what they were used to back home. But over time, they begin to warm up to the local people and learn more about their customs and way of life. One of the women, Emma Clark, played by Sue Lyon, strikes up a romantic relationship with a local doctor named Dr. D.R. Cartwright, played by Eddie Albert.

However, the women's peaceful existence is soon threatened when Tunga Khan and his army invades the village. The women band together to try and fend off the attackers, but they quickly realize that they are no match for the well-armed soldiers. Miss Andrews takes charge and comes up with a plan to try and negotiate with Tunga Khan.

As the situation becomes more desperate, tensions rise among the women. Some members of the group begin to question Miss Andrews' leadership and religious fervor, while others struggle to come to terms with the brutal violence they are witnessing. Margaret Leighton gives a standout performance as Miss Binns, a former prostitute who has turned to Christianity and is haunted by her past.

The tension builds to a dramatic confrontation between the women and Tunga Khan's army, which ultimately puts their faith and courage to the test. The movie is a powerful exploration of faith, sacrifice, and the struggles of women in a male-dominated world. It features strong performances across the board, but particularly from Bancroft, who gives an unforgettable portrayal of a woman determined to protect her beliefs no matter the cost. Overall, 7 Women is a thought-provoking and moving film that still resonates today.
