1001 Grams is a Norwegian drama film that revolves around Marie, a scientist who works at the Norwegian Metrology Institute. Marie is in charge of maintaining the Norwegian standard for mass and volume measurements. She is married and has a daughter, but her personal life is unsatisfactory. Marie is invited to a seminar in Paris on the international system of units, where she will be presenting the Norwegian prototype of the kilogram. This prototype is the one which all kilogram weights are compared to in Norway. The seminar takes place shortly after her father's death, which makes Marie quite emotional. She decides to take some of her father's ashes with her to Paris to scatter them in his favorite garden.
Marie meets Pi, a French scientist who is quite different from Marie. Pi is laid-back and a bit erratic, while Marie is reliable and methodical. The two scientists have an instant attraction and a brief relationship.
While in Paris, Marie also meets Joachim, a man who sells old scales and weights at a flea market. Joachim is fascinated by Marie's prototype of the kilogram and asks her if he can buy it from her. Marie initially refuses, but her relationship with Pi makes her start to question her life's work and the significance of the kilogram prototype.
Marie also has to deal with her failing relationship with her daughter, whom she neglects in favor of her work. She is distant with her daughter, and they have difficulty communicating.
Throughout the film, Marie reflects on her life's work and the importance of the kilogram prototype. She begins to question whether her work has any real value and whether the prototype is worth sacrificing her personal life for.
1001 Grams is a slow-burning drama that focuses on the mundane and the ordinary. The film explores the idea of family, grief, and the concept of measurement. It is beautifully shot, with stunning scenes of Paris and Marie's laboratory. The acting is superb, with Ane Dahl Torp delivering an outstanding performance as Marie.
The film's pace may be slow for some viewers, but it is a deliberate choice that adds to the movie's overall mood and reflection on life. Director Bent Hamer captures beautifully the feeling of loneliness and alienation that exists in modern-day society.
The film also touches on the fragility of life and the importance of human connection. Marie's relationship with Pi serves to highlight how even the most methodical and structured individuals need human contact to forget their routines and question their existence.
Overall, 1001 Grams is a beautiful, thought-provoking drama that explores the meaning of life, love, and measurement. It is well worth a watch for those interested in slow-burning, introspective films.
1001 Grams is a 2015 drama with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3 and a MetaScore of 65.
