Summit Entertainment is a producer of motion pictures, and a distribution company. It is also a subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment. The company began as a production company, and later become an independent film company, before being acquired by Lions Gate. It has headquarters in California and London, and distributes world-wide. It also distributes films in theaters and DVDs world-wide.
Early successes include “American Pie,” and “Twilight. “American Pie” was a teen comedy, and “Twilight” was a teen fantasy thriller, about teen vampires. The sequel to “Twilight,” was hugely successful, with “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” grossing $142,839,137 in three days. The second sequel, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” was also hugely successful, making over $300 million at the U.S. box office. Summit earned $226.5 million in 2008, and was eighth among the studios, mostly due to the success of “Twilight.” With further releases in the series it earned substantially more for 2009.
Other releases include “Enders Game,” “Next Day Air,” “Sorority Row,” “Push,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Letters to Juliet,” and “RED.” “The Hurt Locker” won and Oscar for best picture. “RED” was nominated for a Golden Globe Award,” as Best Motion Picture, comedy or musical. It was acquired by Lions Entertainment in 2012.
Some of its other notable releases have been “Vanilla Sky,” “Insomnia,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “Book of Eli.” Several titles are yet to be released for 2015-2017.
