Founded in 1925, Shueisha is a major publishing company in Japan. The first novel ever published by Shueisha is called, “Jinjo Shogaku Ichinen Josei”. Other novels soon followed, and in the 1930's, the novels “Danshi Yochien” and “Joshi Yochien” were released.
At the end of World War II, Shueisha began publishing a manga line known as “Omoshiro Book”. Soon after, the company released a picture version of “Omoshiro Book”, which was a major success for girls and boys during that time. Also the company's first magazine, “Akaru ky Tanoshi I Shonen-Shojo Zasshi” was released. Soon, “Omoshiro Book” was made into a magazine as well.
By the year of 1952, the Shueisha Hitotsubashi building became entirely independent. During that year, the “Omoshiro Book” magazines ceased publishing, and instead, “Myojo” became a new monthly magazine. Soon, “Omoshiro Book” was replaced with another children's manga magazine, “Yonen Book”. Though it is no longer running, the magazine “Shojo Book” led to the publication of the still active “Ribbon” through it's great success.
In addition to magazines, Shueisha continued to to publish a lot of novels. A compilation of the “Omoshiro Book” series were released as Shonenshojo Nippon Rekishki Zenshu in a variety of 12 different volumes.
Today, the publishing company continues to publish magazines such as “Monthly Young Jump”, “Jump SQ”, “Jump Kai”, “Pinky”, “Cookie”, and many more.
