MyNetworkTV came to be due to the creation of the CW, which combined the affiliates of the WB channel with the CBS-owned affiliates of the UPN channel and was an attempt to raise ratings for both networks. FOX owned several more of the UPN channels, which were not part of the new CW deal. Because of the dissolution of the UPN channel, FOX rebranded their UPN affiliates as MyNetworkTV.
At the beginning of MyNetworkTV's launch, the schedule consisted largely of their own telenovelas, which were adaptations of existing Spanish-language telenovelas for an English-speaking audience. It was largely unsuccessful and MyNetworkTV began instead to adopt other genres of programming.
MyNetworkTV's usual programming now consists of reruns of fairly popular and semi-recent broadcast and basic cable series. Past broadcasting has included the USA series Monk and Burn Notice, as well as Without a Trace, Cold Case and House, among others. Currently they air two of the Law and Order series, Special Victims Unit and Criminal Intent, AMC's The Walking Dead, The Mentalist and Bones. They have also shown reality series, game shows, sports, specials and feature films.
MyNetworkTV has a very limited programming block as of the present time, only airing two hours per weekday evening. Many affiliates air MyNetworkTV programming later than the official air date time, due to local news programs or other local programming that they wish to air first. There are MyNetworkTV affiliates in assorted markets across America, from the West to the Midwest to the East Coast.
